THE FIRST MOVE

What to do this week when your young adult is stuck.

This guide is written for parents of stuck young adults, by the coaching team at Not Therapy. We are a group of young people who have been exactly where your kid is at today, and this guide is written from our perspective of what we wish our parents had known to help us get unstuck.

WHAT’S ACTUALLY IN IT

This is coming from what we’ve seen over and over in our own lives and in the lives of the families we work with. This is the pattern we most commonly see and how you can interrupt it in your own family, this week. It happens in four steps:

  1. Start with a reframe: stuck and lazy are different problems.

  2. Identify the actual pattern: this is the loop the parent who is doing everything is in with a young adult who they see as doing nothing

  3. Take action this week: three small ways you can change what you’re saying to your young adult to support them in moving forward, rather than creating more distance

  4. Watch for progress: it starts smaller than you think, and we show you what to look out for

WHO WROTE THIS

Not Therapy is a team of coaches who work with young adults to help them build momentum and get unstuck. Co-founders Hayley Caddes and Colin MacDonald built this company around what they needed before, during, and after their big moments of “stuckness” as teens and young adults. Our coaches have all been through their own version of what your young adult is going through, and our expertise comes from our lived experience coupled with thousands of hours of working with families just like yours.

We work with young adults in their actual lives: daily texts, regular calls, coaching check-ins, and visiting them in their real-world environment. We work with parents too, because a strong family system is the foundation upon which we built our own success stories. We’ve done this with over fifty families now, and nothing you’re going through would surprise us.

Feel free to meet our coaches and read what our clients and parents have said about working with us, and learn more about our coaching philosophy here.

“The Not Therapy coach jumped in with both feet. What happened next was nothing short of a miracle. Our daughter learned that people really do care for her. There are people that accept her for her and want her to succeed. Because ‘it’s not therapy’, the coach was able to provide our daughter with real examples and experiences of how to react and respond to situations in a timely, and therefore, more effective manner.”
